Winter often seems to be about dreary patios, empty of people and beauty. This isn't necessary. Put away your upholstered garden furniture, weatherproof your wooden benches with varnish and bring them up onto the patio. You can enjoy looking over your garden and planning for next year. Put a really large planter in the middle of your space and plant it with something like a tall standard cotoneaster with green foliage and red, yellow or orange winter berries are sprinkled on the limbs. The crimson fruit will decorate the shrub all winter. Alternatively go for a small winter flowering shrub and keep it protected from mist.
Bird feeders are even more important in winter and birds will come closer to feed in the colder months giving you a rare chance to enjoy them without their being able to hide in the summer vegetation.
To enjoy coffee on the patio in winter, buy a small chiminea that you can light for warmth, and a batch of cheap bright cushions you can sit on while you drink. Find a nice terracotta sconce or candle holder, even a large flower pot is fine, if you put it on the ground and fill it with gravel to keep your candles upright. They warm the area and give a lovely glow.
Planters and paint can help take the dull out of the winter doldrums. Paint is cheap, and there are plenty of plants to enhance your outdoor area during the chilly season. A bright spot on a grey day can be uplifting, so tie your pots with tartan ribbon or buy a cheap tartan rug and let it be a bright splash against the snow.
