Here are two ways to unify your outdoor décor and furnishings by choosing an theme and carrying it through your garden arrangements.
Cottage
Choose cane or rattan furniture or metal furniture with floral covers. Blue and white or chintz designs work well for this theme.
Use wooden baskets or troughs on tables and in shady corners. Put pots of seasonal flowers in them, cover with moss, and add a bow. When eating outdoors, fill the baskets with plants like dianthus or herbs, then add a matching leaf or flower to decorate each place setting.
Herbs in a vase, like fennel and comfrey and rosemary or bay leaves, are a wonderful fragrant addition to meals.
Add herbs to glass pitchers of drinks, the traditional mint or lemon balm in lemonade, rosemary flowers in cherryade etc.
Mexican
Start with the furniture, it needs to be large built, roomy and comfortable: dark red, chocolate brown or cream upholstery are traditional. If it is plain wood, consider painting it, you can enhance the basic furniture with simple designs like spots, zigzags or traditional Mexican themes in bright hot colours.
Incorporate the yellows and oranges of this region in container colours and other accessories. For example, a clay pot, tied with some zigzag printed yellow and red fabric and filled with red hot pokers or calla lilies looks wonderful.
Paint old thick glass tumblers, plain china plates and sundae glasses in bright colours and use coloured straws and coarse cotton or linen napkins to enhance the peasant theme.
