We all like our furnishings to be different, and to reflect our personal sense of style. In the house this can be easy, our pictures and vases, the photographs we display etc, all show our personality, but outdoors can seem more impersonal. There are several ways to make your garden furniture reflect your particular style.
On plastic and resin furniture, stencilling can be a lot of fun. Design a bold stencil that harmonises with your decorating theme - maybe a leaping dolphin for the poolside, an urn or a swag of ivy for a Victorian themed garden or a watermelon slice for a desert island feel. You need spray paint in an appropriate colour or colours too. Spray your design on the table top and the backs of plastic chairs, and pick up the theme with a smaller version of the same stencil on coasters or sprayed onto plastic tumblers for cold drinks. Some paints are also suitable for spraying on canvas chairs and umbrellas - which can bring unity across the theme.
Decoupage is the Victorian art of using images from illustrations or photographs to make a collage. You can decoupage a table by laying a sheet of glass over the surface and setting family photographs underneath, or by making a collage of suitable pictures for the centre of a wrought iron table - these often have a lift out middle section which you can cover and then paint over with outdoor acrylic varnish to protect it from the elements.
