Before you buy garden furniture decide whether you want stackable or foldaway equipment you can store in the shed or garage in winter, alternatively you may want permanent solid garden furniture that stays in place throughout the year. If you want your garden furniture to be a permanent part of your garden, you need to opt for heavy furniture made from hardwood, aluminium or wrought iron (making sure it has rust proofing). While these are more expensive, heavier and more durable materials, and substantial construction methods mean the investment will be cost effective in the long run.
Wood is the best all round choice as it is lightweight, good to look at, and comfortable, but any kind of wooden furniture requires some maintenance. If possible choose a tropical hardwood which is high in natural oil content like teak or courbaril. Softwood furniture is usually made of pine slats and reinforced with metal bench and table ends. This can be just as good an option but you'll need to consider painting or varnishing it regularly.
Wrought iron garden furniture, as long as it is rust proved, is the most durable of all, but it is not as comfortable as wood and heavier to move around.
Resin or plastic furniture is cheapest and can be a good investment if it's not going to have prolonged heavy use. There's no need to opt for the standard flimsy white garden chairs; new styles and colours come on the market every season and give you a chance to ring the changes on your garden décor.
