Sadly, even in the middle of a heat wave, we cannot rely on the weather. Just when you've planned a wonderful garden party or barbecue, the heavens open and a summer storm drops the temperature, or a mist comes down and people start to wish they'd put on a vest! Here are some ways to ensure your summer evening stays warm, whatever the weather.
Patio heater
These are all the rage at present and as they can be used all year round and are really powerful, you don't have to limit yourself to summer evenings. If you're using a patio heater near garden furniture, make sure the upholstery is flame retardant and that the wood doesn't get so hot it dries out.
Chiminea
Chimineas date back to 17th century Mexico, where they were used as ovens to bake bread. They were made of clay since it was the most readily available material in the area. Today cast iron, copper and aluminium are the materials of choice for most chimineas although you can still purchase ones made of clay. They give off heat all round, like a pot-bellied stove, as well as having a chimney you can lift off to reveal a small grilling area for cooking food.
To care for your metal chiminea, assuming it is not one of those meant to rust, coat the entire outside surface with cooking oil... any one will do... and then heat the stove to "burn it on". The oil will provide a clear protective coating that will have a more natural appearance than paint. Reapply the oil every dozen uses or if it rains.
