Harmonising indoor and outdoor furniture

The simplest way to unite the themes of your indoor and outdoor décor is through the use of colour. Throw cushions, rugs, and crockery can unify the two areas of the house. If, for example you have a blue sofa with red cushions, bring some of the red cushions outside and put them on your sun loungers. Pick up the blue of the sofa in the colour of the rugs you throw over your table (this is an especially good idea if you have a white table which bounces back the light as it can cause eyestrain) or in the tone of your patio umbrella. Lay a rug from the doorway out into the garden that picks up the colours of the interior décor, scatter it with cushions or bean bags that pick up the theme and you've created a lounging area, or somewhere for the children to play, that isn't quite inside or out.

When planning for picnics, garden parties or barbecues choose some picnic ware in bright colours that unifies the theme. Pick some flowers and set them in your picnic tumblers, one on the table outside and another on the mantelpiece or coffee table inside. Put more flowers in the same tumblers in the toilet, where most people will visit in the course of the evening! It gives a subtle suggestion of one idea carried through the whole house and makes the garden into just another part of your overall design plan.

For evening events choose tea lights in containers that pick up the theme, or hang appropriately coloured paper lanterns in trees. You can get large paper flowers that you can stand in the mantelpiece and also strew across your outdoor table and weave into the backs of chairs, giving a South Seas feel to the whole décor.
