Wooden furniture looks wonderful, whether indoors or outside in the garden, but because of the effects of weather, we can't make the same easy decision about outdoor furniture as we do with indoor - soft woods like pine just don't last long enough when they have to face the elements. So we all want hardwood furniture, but not if it's at the expense of the dwindling rain forests.
Two sources that are available to the British marketplace can guarantee that the beauty in your garden won't be at the cost of the tropical beauty of the rain forest.
The Tropical Forest Trust (TFT) guarantees hardwood furniture is made from timber sourced from forests on a strictly controlled management programme which will lead to independent certification of the origin of the timber. In close association with Greenpeace, TFT have been able to produce guidelines which allow this environmental guarantee on tropical hard wood products. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international network to promote responsible management of the world's forests. Several thousand products are produced using FSC certified wood and carrying the FSC trademark. FSC operates through its network of National Initiatives in more than 34 countries. Its product label allows consumers worldwide to recognize products that support the growth of responsible forest management worldwide.
Alternatively, you may ask to look at a certificate of origin, choose to buy second-hand furniture which will at least mean that the wood will not be pulped or burned and new furniture purchased in its place or invest in beech wood furniture which is produced in European forests and, as while not quite as hard wearing as teak or sapele, still offers a lifetime's use.
